Someone once mentioned that one of her favourites ice cream is the Italian classic of gelato topped with olive oil and a twist of sea salt. This sounds strange? But she chose to embrace this most delicious of Italian traditions.
But Italians say they are the godfathers of ice cream, or rather, gelato. While Gelato is slightly warmer than ice cream which denotes that it doesn’t have that icy, frozen feeling. The difference is that. It’s prepared with milk rather than cream also accurately flavoured with chocolate – rather than a synthetic added flavour.
All of this means gelato, rather than ice cream, is the foodie’s frozen treat of choice. Gelato having its own excellence also has this additional heavenly flavor when olive oil and a dusting of salt is added.
Note that for the best result, the oil used must be of the best quality- extra virgin olive oil and has to be sprinkled sparingly over while the salt must also be sea salt and just a few turns cracked over the top.
You may signal shock faces and as this might sound strange to you and also wonder at this sort of combination.
You don’t have to because, salt and sweet is an age-old dessert tradition therefore, and adding slick of oil with richness of the gelato is a match made in heaven.
Why not try it out see how it tastes?
