Fuel scarcity during festive periods in Nigeria seems to be a reoccurring event, especially Christmas season. Drivers have been hit so hard and the masses cannot tell cause of the scarcity.

Recently, the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) have embarked on indefinite strike due to the recent happenings.

From information gathered, it was alleged that during the Muslim festive periods, the issue of fuel scarcity is not experienced.

Also, from research, these are the major causes of fuel scarcity in the country.

  • Loading and distribution of Petroleum product: It is always difficult for distributors to transport the products, since during this period, major roads are busier.
  • Refineries: Since there is no active refinery in the country, it becomes impossible to get the product that would circulate across the country.
  • Retailers: During this period, retailers tend to increase the price of the product to make extra profit, since the demand for the product will be high.

To curb this menace of fuel scarcity, Government should always checkmate the activities of the retailers during this period.

Again, distribution of the product should be decentralized thereby, making it easier for the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) to distribute to retailers.

If all of these could be put in place, I believe it would remedy the ugly situation.
