A community chief has been reportedly kidnapped and two other persons killed by unknown gunmen in Rumundele, Emohua Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The incident was confirmed by the Spokesman for Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni.
The incident which took place during the weekend, started as a result of a clash between two rival cult groups in Mgbuelia village of Rumundele during the community’s cultural hunting expedition.
An eyewitness who gave his name as Alex Ibani, told newsmen that after the cult clash, at about some minutes past 10 p.m. armed men stormed the home of one Chief Goodluck Umentor and took him away.
He said: “My brother, the problem started Sunday, when the village celebrated its cultural festival of hunting expedition. Two cult gangs clashed in the process which led to the murder of two persons.
“This (Monday) evening, we just heard gunshots only to discover that a recognized chief has been kidnapped.”
Reports say that the abductors has contacted the family of the chief but the chief’s whereabouts remains unknown.
However, Omoni assured the residence of the determination of the police to rescue the chief and persecute the perpetrators of the crime.
