Many time we here of clay pot we quickly conclude it to be one old instrument used in cooking. Now clay pots are not only used to make one pot meal but can also be used to bake bread and make roasting. When clay pot is heated to a high temperature it creates steam and moisture to whatever you are cooking and the nutrients is retained.

Lets take for instance you want to cook with clay pot, you combine poultry and meat with a little liquid seasoning and vegetable to produce the tenderness of a braise with the finish of roasting. While cooking ensure that the cover is on and when nearly finished then the cover can be removed, this will allow you get a golden brown finish.

Adopt these techniques in handling the pot and cooking.

  • Remember to soak the pot in cool water for 10 – 15 minutes before use.
  • Do not put a clay pot in a preheated oven to avoid  it cracking from the shock of the heat.
  • Always bake at high temperatures of (400º – 475º F) so as to enable the moisture that’s saturated the clay gradually turn into steam.
  • Clay pot cooking does not need added fats. Just like microwave cooking, add fats only as a seasoning.

  • Make sure not to place a hot clay pot on a cold or cool surface because it will crack. This means that you will always place a wood or heat resistant support or potholder on the ground or wherever you want to place the clay pot.
  • Make sure you don’t use clay pots on stoves.
  • Add liquids sparingly — as any food you’re cooking will throw off liquids and you don’t wantthe pot to overflow.
  • Clay pots retains heat, a clay pot will continue to cook after you take it out of the oven. So include this into you cooking time or remove the cover and the food as soon as you removed it from the oven.
