FIFA Fines Russia Football Federation £22,000 For Racist Chants

FIFA have sanctioned the Russian Soccer Federation following a matchup between their national side and France back in March.

Towards the end of March this year, France’s trip to Saint Petersburg to face Russia played host to some rather ugly scenes as certain members of the crowd subjected some of the French players – most notably Manchester United star Paul Pogba – to racist taunts and chants.

According to Sky Sports, FIFA have noted both the ‘gravity of the situation but also the limited number of fans involved’, and in the time since have reviewed video evidence.

Two Europa League appearances for Zenit St. Petersburg have resulted in similar punishments from FIFA due to fan abuse and with the city expected to host several games at this summer’s World Cup, many have voiced their outrage.

£20,000 was the fine that was handed to the federation and we’re sure that preventative measures will be taken to avoid any further repeat incidents.
