Hypertension (HTN or HT), also known as high blood pressure (HBP), is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. [Wikipedia]

Most times, HBP symptoms can be difficult to detect and also when left untreated could result to severe health issues. However, a hypertensive person should not eat all food as some can either be harmful or helpful, for instance, eating of much salt should be avoided.Though, there are foods that have hidden salt content in them such as; already  processed foods like bread,biscuits, breakfast cereals, prepared ready meals or takeaways, and frozen pizzas.

While other helpful foods are non processed foods such as fruits and vegetables, examples are; spinach, pistachios and coriander. Eating fresh fruits like melon can also help control blood pressure.

‘Nutritionist Josh Axe’ says ‘coriander’ has been used traditionally for years to treat a number of high blood pressure conditions.

His site states: “In 2009, a revolutionary study began attempting to define what exactly coriander can do. Researchers found that it exhibited several positive benefits, including a hypotensive (blood-pressure lowering) effect.”

The site adds: “Consuming fresh fruit (as opposed to juices or sweetened, canned fruits) is a great way to increase your intake of fibre, electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, and antioxidants like flavonoids and resveratrol.”

“Two to four servings is a good amount for most people, especially fruits like berries, citrus, kiwi, apples and melons.”

In the UK it said that HBP affects more than one in four adults which the major cause is much salt intake, and they were told not to exceed 6g of salt daily.
