The Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) has generated mega increase in Rice production in Anambra state. Mr Jude Nwankwa, the acting Programme Manager, has assured that the state will produce more than 500,000 tonnes of rice in this year’s harvest following the development in the field.

He said: In 2016, we projected 180, 000 metric tonnes of rice, but we surpassed it by 20, 000. In 2017 our target is to produce 500, 000 metric tonness of rice, but the information from the field indicates that the figure will even go higher again.”

Mr Nwankwo added that, “By the grace of God, Anambra will commence rice export after  harvest this year.”

It was also gathered that Dr. Odoemena Ben, Country Programme Officer in Nigeria, the International Fund for Agricultural Development Programme (IFAD) disclosed that the rate at which rice farming is going, the country will not have to import the grain next year.
