Nigeria vs South Africa: Super Eagles coach happy to be back, hopes to end AFCON hiatus

The coach of Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, is excited to be back in the country, especially in Uyo, where the Super Eagles have not only played all their home games, but are unbeaten.

The former Niger Republic boss, who spoke to reporters after arriving Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state, looked forward to yet another win, after the Eagles defeated Algeria 3-1 in their last game.
“It’s good to be back here,” Rohr said.
“We are happy to be back in Uyo and we’ve won our last game here, so, we look forward to another win,” he added.
The Super Eagles arrived the country last week, after a ten day training camp in France, where they played two international friendly matches against Corsica and Togo, as they step up preparations ahead the crucial 2019 AFCON qualifier against South Africa.

Nigeria missed the last two editions of the AFCON, and for Rohr, the target is clear- to ensure the Super Eagles aren’t ‘spectators’ when the 2019 edition kicks off.

“We want to qualify for the Nations’ cup because it is a fantastic adventure,” said Rohr.
“We were only spectators at the last edition in Gabon.
“It starts with the big game against South Africa on Saturday and I hope we will be able to do it,” he concluded.
Nigeria will host South Africa on Saturday in a 2019 AFCON qualifier at the Nest of Champions stadium, Uyo. The last time both sides met at the same venue, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
