I have been thinking about this for a while now. Why can’t some parents teach their kids their mother tongue Thousands of kids cannot speak their mother tongue. Simply because their parents don’t teach them.

Yes, i know not everyone has the money to send their kids to school to learn a new language. But at least let them learn by thorough teaching of their mother tongue even if it is at home. Some parents believe that their kids don’t need to speak their native language and that learning English is more important. They got it all wrong. English language is secondary in Africa setting while mother tongue is primary.

Yes, learning English is a great essential but learning their mother tongue is the most essential. Let’s use Yoruba for example. The reason i choose to talk about Yoruba is because i was born there. I also have many Yoruba friends who cannot speak Yoruba and even ask me to help them.

After sending Children to go school oversees, most parents do not border their kids with speaking mother tongue. WRONG! when your kids grow up and cant speak mother tongue, they are only going to be angry at their parents. When they go home and everyone around them speaks their native language and they cant, that’s going to be embarrassing.

Please, let this sound as an advice to all African parents again! Teach your kids their mother tongue! Even if you have invest 30 minuets a day after work and just go over the alphabet, numbers and greetings. At least so they can speak some when they are growing up. Not doing so may make them feel left out whenever they are with friends that uses their mother tongue.

Thanks for reading and please, don’t let your kids miss out!
