Head of Kebbi State emergency management agency, Sani Dodo, has said six children died in a boat mishap on the River Niger.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when a boat carrying about 78 passengers collided with another vessel transporting onions to a market in the fishing town of Yauri in Kebbi State.
“The boats were sailing in the dark without light at about 9:00 pm on Tuesday when they collided and capsized.
“We have recovered six bodies of children- five boys and a girl between the ages of five and eight.
“Sixty passengers were rescued and 13 of them have been taken to the hospital for treatment from various injuries,” Dodo said.
He disclosed that search is still on for 12 other people from the passenger boat who are still missing.
The passengers were mostly traders from the nearby Suru village.
Mr. Dodo complained that boat mishaps was becoming too frequent because drivers are not adhering to safety rules.
