Petr Cech kept his 200th Premier League clean sheet on Sunday, saving a penalty from Troy Deeney in the process, while the trio of Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all impressed up front.
Afterwards Arsène Wenger spoke to Arsenal Media about continuing the momentum from Thursday’s Europa League win over Milan.
“The fact that we won the game, first of all. After a difficult Thursday night game, on Sunday morning we still had the spirit to stick together. For moments we played very well and for moments we had to stick together and suffer.
“Overall, we did very well. I am convinced that is a good basis for the team on the spirit front and overall I am very happy with the spirit of the players. The way they responded to a disappointing week, is absolutely remarkable.
“We have room for improvement, but you can see that we can score goals. It’s not a coincidence that we scored against Crystal Palace, we scored against Everton, we scored today and since January we have scored many goals against anybody. Personally I would like to give credit to our defenders as well, for today and in Milan. They have done extremely well, so that is important.
On Cech’s 200th clean sheet and penalty save…
Petr Cech shows a little bit how quickly things change in football. He was in hell last week and in heaven today. But, I would like to personally congratulate him for a remarkable achievement. I have a huge respect for consistency. It shows a huge level of motivation and intelligence, and he shows plenty of that.
on whether the milestone was weighing on Petr’s mind…
It did. I am convinced. They all say no, but we know all – it’s not true.
on the second leg against Milan on Thursday…
I told you that the confidence comes back slowly, but it comes back with spirit. We have shown spirit and we are in a strong position now against Milan. Let’s prepare quietly, but with humility and keep that desire in the team.
on Shkodran Mustafi…
He has a groin problem and hopefully will recover, because I think at the moment he is in a very good shape and he is very important to the team.
