The Inspector General of police Ibrahim Idris had on Wednesday appeared before the Senate committee set to look into the allegation and counter allegation between the inspector general of police and Senator Isah Misau, the Senator representing Bauchi Central. The Inspector general of police who went in the company of his lawyer and Senator Itah refuse to answer any question from the lawmakers during the meeting. 

He submitted that there is no point answering any question from the lawmakers since the case had gone to court already. Ibrahim Idris told the Senate that he has only appeared before the senate committee out of respect for the rule of law. He however said there would be no need probing further to get fact about the allegation alleged against him.

The Inspector General of police who had earlier refused to appear before the senate finally appeared on Wednesday, 8 November 2017, after he was threatened with an arrest warrant. The police IG made the appearance to the senate with his lawyer who supported his position of not answering probing questions from the lawmakers. Recall that Senator Misau had accused the Inspector General of police of receiving money from some oil companies with a promise to provide the oil companies with security.

Alex Iziyon who is the lawyer to the police chief said since the case was already in court, any comment made would prejudice the matter.

The IG’s lawyer who was there present told the senate committee that the would be no need expecting his client to answer any question. His words- “Because we don’t have anything to hide, we have responded to the allegations paragraph by paragraph. “We know you have rules here and we are asking you to look at it,” he said.

The senate committee chairman Frances Alimekhena said that the case of virement of the police 2016 budget that was mentioned in the allegations had not gone to court before the committee was constituted “The virement of 2016 budget did not go to court. “The committee was constituted before you went to court. The senate is not out to witch-hunt anybody.”

Frances Alimekhena said that the committee will invite the inspector general on a later date to discuss the document that they have been served with after carefully studying the document.
