Akwa United manager Abdul Maikaba eyes NPFL glory

Following their hard-fought victory over two-time African champions, Enyimba International in a week 27 match, Akwa United coach, Abdul Maikaba has set his sights on winning the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL title.

United defeated the Peoples’ Elephant 1-0 at the Nest of Champions stadium, Uyo to go third, five points behind leaders, Plateau United, and three behind second placed team, MFM FC.

For Maikaba, after seeing his side close the gap between them and the top two, he believes the league title is now within reach.

“I must start by saying that I am really happy with the level of progress made by my team already this season, and I believe that the progress is down to the commitment the players have shown so far,” Maikaba told Aiofootball.com.

“We now have a high chance of clinching the title at the end of the season.

“I can say without mincing words that we have now caught up with MFM and Plateau United, reducing their leads from 13 points to 3 points, which means that we are already there and set to clinch the title,” the former Wikki Tourist manager added.

The Uyo-based side next travel to Jos to face leaders, Plateau United, in what’s expected to be an interesting test for Maikaba and his team, who have only lost one of their last five matches in the league.

Maikaba is in his first season at the Nest of Champions, after leaving Wikki Tourists, who he guided to the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in their history, following a third place finish in the league.
