French Open: Djokovic, Nadal advance to second round

Marcel Granollers defeat at the France open

Defending champion, Novak Djokovic, has defeated Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-3 6-4 6-2 to book a place in the second round at Roland Garros.

It wasn’t an easy game for the Serbian as he had to dig deep to overcome Granollers. Djokovic was broken four times but proved to be too much for Granollers.

Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal overcame Benoit Paire 6-1 6-4 6-1 to also book a place in the next round.

The nine-time champion didn’t waste time in taking the first set, but Paire fought back to take a 3-1 lead in the second, but the Spaniard survived as Paire failed to punish him further.

Surviving the scare, Nadal regained control of the match, and then, taking the third set to advance to the next round where he’s expected to meet Robin Haase.

For Nadal, he was happy to have won his first match.

“Always at the start, I’m happy for the victory,” he said.

“It was not an easy opponent in the first round, obviously. He’s an uncomfortable opponent that already had some good victories this year. I came on court with a lot of respect,” he added.
