MFM FC and Akwa United have closed the gap between them and NPFL leaders, Plateau United, after they defeated Wikki Tourists 1-0 and Gombe United 3-0 respectively.
NPFL top scorer, Stephen Odey, scored the only goal of the match, five minutes before half time to hand the Olukoya Boys a crucial home win.
“I’m happy for this goal,” Odey told News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, moments after the match. “It does not matter to me whether it’s a long goal, what we need is the victory and thank God we’re able to win the match.
“We are looking forward to more victories which we want to use to have a shot at the NPFL trophy or represent Nigeria at the continental level,” the 19 year-old striker added.
It was Odey’s 17th of the season, and sees him remain atop the scorers’ chart in the Nigerian Professional Football league.
Also commenting on the victory was media officer of MFM, Olawale Quadri, who dedicated the win to founder and proprietor of the club, Dr. Olukoya.
“The victory is well deserved,” Quadri said. “But it is a victory to the founder and proprietor of the club, Dr. Olukoya, who has labored for the sustenance of the club.
“Our proprietor has always been our number one supporter and we appreciate his efforts over the club. He is sports loving and always encourages the youths.
Quadri also said the Olukoya Boys hope to win the NPFL for their founder, Dr. Olukoya.
“We will also try our best to win the league in his honour, as our spiritual father and also our indefatigable proprietor,” he added.
The victory ensured that MFM moved within just two points of leaders, Plateau United, who lost 1-0 in Minna, to Niger Tornadoes.
In Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, Akwa United brightened their chances of playing in the continent next season with a convincing 3-0 thumping of visiting Gombe United at the Nest of Champions stadium.
Musa Newman started the scoring 12 minutes after the break, with the home side going 2-0 up after mecurial midfielder, Alhassan Ibrahim, converted from the spot with 15 minutes left to play.
Christian Pyagbara, a 51st minute substitute, put the result beyond Gombe United’s reach when he scored a third for Akwa United, seven minutes from time.
Akwa United moved to third, after the win, on 46points, albeit with a game in hand.
In Kano, defending champions, Rangers International of Enugu, continue to struggle in what has been a poor title defence, as they were defeated 2-0 in Kano.
Two second half goals, first by Jamiu Alimi in the 32nd minute, and Junior Lokosa, two minute before half time, condemned the Flying Antelopes to their 11th loss of the season.
Nasarawa United recorded the only away win the in NPFL over the weekend, thanks a 0-1 win over hosts, Sunshine Stars in Ijebu Ode, Ondo state.
The only goal of the encounter was scored by Abdulrahman Bashir in the 39th minute as Nasarawa left Ijebu Ode with all three points.
However, despite their impressive away win, Nasarawa remain 9th on the NPFL table, with 41 points after 29 matches
